NASA is taking steps to ensure the preservation of its invaluable historical materials as it prepares to close the Goddard Space Flight Center library in Greenbelt, Maryland, which houses a vast collection of books and documents detailing the United States’ journey into space. This impending closure, set to occur within the next few months, has sparked significant apprehension among historians and researchers regarding the potential loss of unique and rare records.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman recently addressed these concerns on social media platform X, emphasizing that every item housed in the library will undergo a thorough review prior to the library’s shutdown. This decision aligns with a facility consolidation strategy that was approved in 2022 during the Biden administration.
"The physical library space at Goddard is closing as part of a long-planned facilities consolidation," Isaacman explained. He highlighted that this move aims to digitize important materials, transfer them to alternative libraries, or preserve them for future historical reference.
Isaacman also responded to reports suggesting that NASA might discard key documents, labeling such assertions as misleading. Many critics have voiced their fears that valuable historical and technical records could be lost forever.
"At no point is NASA ‘tossing out’ important scientific or historical materials, and that framing has led to several other misleading headlines," he asserted in his statement.
While he acknowledged the importance of preserving history, Isaacman reiterated that NASA's primary focus remains on ambitious future missions, including sending astronauts deeper into space and establishing a sustainable presence on the moon. He assured that researchers would still have access to necessary resources.
The closure of the Goddard library is part of a wider initiative that includes the shutdown of over a dozen buildings and laboratories within the center.
According to a report by the New York Times, this closure will mark the eighth library that NASA has closed across the nation since 2022. Fortunately, libraries at other facilities, such as the Ames Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory—both located in California—are expected to remain operational. The library at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, will also continue to serve its community.
