Indian Motorcycle's New Global Headquarters: A Legacy Continues
Indian Motorcycle, America's first motorcycle company, is making a big move. In 2026, it will celebrate its 125th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its history. But it's not just about the anniversary; it's also about a new beginning. Indian is relocating its global headquarters from Medina, Minnesota, to Golden Valley, Minnesota, a move that symbolizes a fresh chapter in the brand's journey.
This relocation is a result of a change in ownership. In October 2025, Polaris, the company that had owned Indian since 2011, sold Indian Motorcycle to Carolwood LP, a private equity firm based in Los Angeles. The acquisition was finalized in February 2026, and Carolwood's first move was to secure a seven-year lease for a 37,832-square-foot property in Golden Valley.
The new headquarters will be a hub for operations, product development, and prototyping. In a press release, Mike Kennedy, the new CEO, expressed excitement about this next step, emphasizing their commitment to innovation, growth, and delivering exceptional products. He stated, 'As we begin this new chapter, we are proud to remain in Minnesota, a state that has played an important role in our journey.'
Indian Motorcycle's history dates back to 1897 when George M. Hendee founded the Hendee Manufacturing Company to design and build bicycles. In 1901, Hendee opened a facility in Springfield, Massachusetts, to produce gasoline-powered pace bicycles. This marked the beginning of America's first motorcycle company. The collaboration between Hendee and Swedish-born engineer Oscar Hedstrom led to the creation of the 42-degree V-twin engine, which paved the way for a new industry.
In 1923, the company was renamed the Indian Motocycle Company, and it has since undergone various ownership changes. Indian's early bikes, such as the Scout, Chief, and Ace, played a crucial role in popularizing motorcycle riding. The brand's legacy is something its new owner, Carolwood LP, seems determined to uphold.
To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Indian is offering special merchandise, paint jobs, and the limited-edition 2026 Indian Chief Vintage. This modern take on the 1940s Chief model starts at $20,499 and features a 116-CI engine with 115 lb-ft of torque, available in black metallic or Indian's iconic red. The 2026 Indian Chief Vintage is a true testament to the brand's commitment to innovation and quality.
As Indian Motorcycle embarks on this new chapter, it continues to build upon its rich history, ensuring that its legacy of innovation and craftsmanship remains strong for generations to come.
